What's a benefit? A benefit is the most basic component of your products. Currently, our solution supports a variety of benefits, such as a face-to-face session, an activity/resource in a course, a quiz attempt, a course topic, a course enrollment, a program allocation, or a certification assignment.
You must set up benefits before you're able to set up products and set prices. Most of these options are not visible until ecommerce is enabled.
Think about how you want the experience to come together for the users. Do you want them to buy a session for a specific synchronous event and gain enrollment to the course at the same time? You can do that by setting up a F2F session as a benefit, adding the commerce enrollment to the course and then creating a product that grants both the F2F seat and the course enrollment. The system will automatically warn you and your users if a product has a dependency.
As a reminder when you're setting up your benefits you are not setting a price. That is handled later when you set up products.
Course Topics, Resources, or Activities
This benefit type is based on an access restriction plugin called "Commerce." To configure this benefit you go into the course you want to add premium/paid content to and select the topic and/or activity/resource.
Quiz attempts (a special version of the above)
This benefit type allows you to limit access to quiz attempts based on a purchase. This does require a special site configuration to be enabled prior to using this option, "Enable zero attempts allowed." You can access this setting at Site Administration > Plugins > Activity modules > Quiz > Number of attempts quiz access rule.
Once that option is checked you'll be able to set up the ecommerce option within each individual quiz settings page under the "Extra restrictions on attempts" section.
To require payment to make any attempts, set the "Attempts allowed" under the "Grade" section to zero. Then enable the option "Enable purchasing of additional quiz attempts" under "Extra restrictions on attempts." To enable one free attempt and then charge for re-takes you would set the initial number of attempts to 1.
Face-to-face Sessions (Legacy)
Note: This benefit type is not available on our Managed Hosting Moodle instances at this time. It is available for EDU and WORK.
This benefit type is a special type that allocates a user to a specific F2F session within a course. Since there are often limits on the number of possible attendees, the checkout process for these seat(s) reserves the seat(s) during the checkout process based on the timeout settings you can configure in the Commerce site settings. The default is 10 minutes.
To use this benefit type, create an instance of the Face-to-face plugin in a course and create a session. Once eCommerce is enabled a new option will display called "Enable e-commerce." Simply check that box and registration for that session will become an available benefit.
Course enrollment
This benefit type is based on a course enrollment method. To use this method ensure that the "Commerce" enrollment plugin is enabled under Site Administration > Plugins > Manage enrol plugins.
Navigate to the course you want to charge for and go to the Participants tab. From the Enrolled users dropdown - select the Enrollment methods option to display all the enabled Enrollment methods.
If you want to limit enrollment to only paying users remove any methods that are present except Manual enrollments and then using the "Add method" dropdown add the "Commerce enrolment" option. You can set a maximum number of enrolled users and the default role - typically this will be Student and nothing set for unlimited enrollments.
When you're done the page will look like this:
Program allocation
This benefit type is disabled by default. To enable this option go to Site Administration > Program Settings and check the "Allow e-commerce allocation" option.
Once this option is enabled you should see the commerce allocation option within each program. Once you enable the E-Commerce option on the Allocations tab of a given program you'll be able to set whether it's active, whether to allow new allocations or not, and whether to apply a limit to the number of users able to purchase licenses.
Certification assignment
This benefit type is accessible under the Assignment settings tab for each Certification. Once enabled you're able to set whether it's active, whether new sign ups are allowed and whether to apply a limit to the number of users able to purchase licenses.
