Notify students when grades are posted

Credit (Janelle cleaves): Is there a way to have Moodle notify students via the email on their account when their classes are open? Does Moodle do this automatically?

  Credit (Jason Rodgers): You could use the PLD and the Event as Course Start Date.  Set the Condition to User role check to Student, and the Action for an email.

  hi, is there a solution / options that doesn't use the course start date as the event?  We have groups that will commence their classes at different dates.  At the moment we have an automated solution for enrolling students into their classes (LMS courses) based on information in our student management system (SMS) - they are enrolled into the LMS course when they register into the SMS but their status is 'awaiting start' until the start date in SMS hits and then the students status in the LMS is updated to 'active'.  

  It would be great to have a Condition to User role check = Student + status = active. But as there is no Condition on user role status - looking for other solutions / possibilities.
