Best practice suggestion for a data retention policy for my LMS
Credit (Kyle Matthew Wright, Ph.D.): I am interested in feedback or information regarding building a retention policy for data in our LMS. I am curious as to how other institutions are addressing this issue.

Credit (Jason Rodgers): Really is going to boil down to what do you HAVE to keep? Do you need individual grade assignments or just the final grade? Do you have a time period to dispute a grade? As for keep ing the date in the LMS, do you need to? for instance if the final grade is recorded in a SIS and that is all you need. I would keeps the logs for at least the dispute time + the length of time your longest semester is.

Credit (Josh Manders): If you're talking about internal data retention, I recommend you look to current federal and state policies. For us in Oregon, we're required to hold onto records for a minimum of 5 years but depending on policy interpretation, it could be as long as 10 years16. We choose the later because cherry picking courses wasn't a viable option in our backup process. LMK if I can answer any specific questions you might have.
I have no idea how people in the EU are working with GDPR rules. That's gotta be a hot mess to try and track.
