Extending Time for Accomodations

    Hi Janelle!

This is a great question! One of the things I like about Moodle(TM) based LMS's, like Open LMS, is that student privacy is well maintained with the way user overrides function for academic accommodations.

Setting these up individually can be time consuming, so, I usually advise teachers to have a group in their course, assign students who will be using accommodations to the group, and use group overrides on their timed assignments.

Roles are a great resource for so many access related needs, but remember, if students can see the participants list in a course, they can see the roles that others are assigned which might translate to the disclosure of a students accommodation status, so using overrides is a more private way to accomplish accommodations.

A few important notes: Federal law prohibits intentionally or accidentally disclosing accommodation status to anyone not directly involved with managing accommodation. For that reason, it is important to avoid designating a student as receiving accommodation in places that other LMS users could see this information, this includes, but is not limited to, designations in their LMS profile, naming groups, or roles in such a way that indicates a students accommodation status. Roles and groups can be visible in many places inside Open LMS, so be sure to choose a nondescript group name.

I hope this helps, and if you think it would be helpful for others, we are happy to present this at the next Community Meeting.

    Kind regards,

    Amy

    Hello Amy,

Thanks for your response! I tested out doing group overrides, and it worked well. My only issue with it was that when that course's content is imported into another course, it carries over the same dates for the overrides rather than adjusting them with respect to the new start date. That with the group overrides being a bit buried has me concerned that overrides could be easily missed leading to a quiz, forum, etc. being fully closed from the get go to the student who requires accommodations. Is there a way to set the group overrides so they adjust the dates automatically?

We definitely do not want to violate student privacy. To that end, I would like some clarification, if possible, about some of the visibility-related settings. If this were able to be accomplished using a custom role, my understanding is that defining that role so that all roles except the Teacher role are unchecked under the "Allow role to view" setting should protect the student's privacy as only the teacher and site admins would be able to see it. Similarly, when creating groups, there is a "Group membership visibility" setting that has an option for the group to be hidden. The tooltip on the page indicates that only teachers [and I assume admins] can see the group and its members. Am I misunderstanding the functionality of these two different settings?

    Best,
    Janelle
