Displaying preferred names

Hi all

I have a question about preferred names in the LMS and how others manage this.  
In our LMS the users name (legal name) is created from our SMS.  Users are unable to change their name in the LMS.  There is a preferred name field in our SMS.  I’m keen to hear how others in similar situations enable a user’s preferred name to be displayed, rather than their legal name.

  Hi Tanya.   Moodle has an alternate name field in the user profile.    Have you experimented with that?   I believe that if a user has an alternative name, then Moodle will use this instead.

   

  If you already hold the preferred name in your SMS, you might be able to map this to the alternative name field in Moodle, to automate the process.

  thanks Greg - yes I do believe there has been some exploration re mapping the alternative name field.  Will check out those links you provided.
