What's New in Moodle™?

Available on all platforms
Below is some general information about the major updates and new features that have been released within the Boost and Classic themes in recent versions of core Moodle™. 

Moodle™ 4.5 

New for Admin 

  • AI Subsystem: There are options for admins to add AI providers. Additionally, users with the relevant capability can generate text and images for course content, and users with the relevant capability can request content summaries. 
  • Screen recording in TinyMCE: Users with the appropriate capability can record their screen within the editor.
  • Cohorts deletion: You can now select and bulk delete Cohorts. Optionally disable the automatic saving of the previous question settings 
  • Other Improvements: 
    • Selected questions in a quiz can be regraded 
    • Competencies may now be selected as a source when creating custom reports 
    • Timezone and language may be included in user reports for custom reports 
    • Improvements to badges include smoother workflow and the ability to have duplicate badges in a course

New for Instructors 

  • AI Subsystem: There are options for admins to add AI providers. Additionally, users with the relevant capability can generate text and images for course content. Users with the relevant capability can request content summaries. 
  • Subsections: If enabled by admin, a new setting with edit mode enabled allows teachers to create subsections Expandable subsections help learners better focus.
  • Assignment UI improvements: Along with better filtering, key actions are now available without the need to scroll down. A sticky footer provides easy access to bulk actions in the grading screen.
  • Assignment Settings: There are options for default grade and scale types. Instructors can grant attempts automatically.
  • Quiz Improvements: Drag and drop and edit categories with modernized category management. Selected questions in a quiz can be regraded.
  • Media Enhancement: Create a short screen recording via TinyMCE and embed the screen recording into forum posts or other TinyMCE areas. 
  • Other improvements:
    • Use badges with the same name in a single course. 
    • Learners will be notified of upcoming and overdue assignments, along with quizzes about to open. 

Moodle™ 4.3 

New for Admins 

  • Site-wide default completion page: Admins can define default completion settings which teachers can configure in an improved default completion page. 
  • Restrict tools to categories: LTI External tools may be restricted to courses in specific categories only. 

New for Instructors 

  • Edit links with access directly to certain settings 
  • Group icons for instructors: A group icon displays on hover for activities allowing groups and allows for quicker access to group mode settings. 
  • New availability setting: From 'More', a new setting allows easy editing of availability options. Teachers can quickly edit availability settings from the relevant item. 
  • New messaging room: Must be enabled first! Teachers can add a messaging room for class messaging. 
  • Add new LTI External tools more easily: Teachers can specify which tools will display for selection in the Activity chooser. Learn more. 
  • Bulk edit course content. 
  • Improved Gradebook Search in Gradebook Improved grader report layout. 
  • Question bank improvements: customize your question bank. 
  • Only students appear in whole forum grader. 
  • Save quiz attempts: If a quiz is not configured to auto-submit student attempts when time expires, those attempts could end up stuck "in progress." You can now reopen quiz attempts that were never submitted and are stuck in progress. 
  • Your course saves your place. 
  • H5P saves student progress. 

New for Users 

  • Streamlined course content: Narrower activity cards with smaller icons. 
  • Drop-down menus: Completion conditions can now be selected through a drop-down menu. 
  • Course index collapse/expand all: Expand all/collapse all options for the course index on the course page.
