The Open LMS team has put together a few sample rules for the Personalized Learning Designer for use in your site. You can edit them to meet your individual needs, but the bulk of the work has been done for you!
Sample 1: Failed Quiz Rule:
You can use PLD to alert students when they fail a quiz. This rule will allow you to send out this alert when they fail any quiz; you can modify it to be sent for specific quizzes as well.
Events: Select Activity graded > Quiz > Any of type > Add. To use this rule for a specific quiz, select the quiz name from the Activity menu.
Conditions: Select Activity grade range > Use the activity that triggered this rule. Enter a percentage in Grade is less than. This grade should be the lowest passing percentage on the quiz. For example, if 65% is a failing grade, enter 66 in the text box. Select Save.
Actions: Select Send email and then select Add. Select who you want the email to come from and select Add recipient > Triggering User. Enter the subject for the email, or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Enter the email text or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Select Save.
Rule name: Enter a rule name that describes the rule. Select Save.
Sample 2: Course Not Accessed Rule:
You can use PLD to alert students when they haven’t logged into the course in a few days. This rule can be edited to send a notification after a few days or on a weekly basis.
Events: Select Recurring event and choose how often you want the event to occur. You can choose to have the event happen daily or weekly at a specific time. Choose your starting and ending dates and select Add. To send an alert every three days, for example, select daily and enter 3 in the text box.
Conditions: Select Course login > Add. Select User has NOT logged into course and enter the number of number of days after which you want to alert the user. Select Save.
To send an alert when a student has not logged in for three days, enter 3 in the text box. Select User role check > Add. Set the configuration so that the triggering user is in the student role, then select Save. Select All of these conditions must be filled. This will send out alerts only to students who have not entered the course.
Actions: Select Send email and then select Add. Select who you want the email to come from and select Add recipient > Triggering User. Enter the subject for the email, or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Enter the email text or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Select Save.
Rule name: Enter a rule name that describes the rule.
Sample 3: Remediation or Revision Rule:
You can use PLD to redirect users to a remediation or review activity if they have failed a lesson, quiz, SCORM, or assignment. This rule is set to redirect after a lesson, but can be edited by selecting a different activity type.
Events: Select Recurring event and choose how often you want the event to occur. You can choose to have the event happen daily or weekly at a specific time. Choose your starting and ending dates and select Add. To send an alert every three days, for example, select daily and enter 3 in the text box.

Sample 4: Course Grade Message Rule:
You can use PLD to send a message when a course grade drops below a certain percentage.
Events: Select Recurring event and choose how often you want the email to send. You can choose to have the event happen daily or weekly at a specific time. Choose your starting and ending dates and select Add. To send an alert every Friday, for example, select weekly and select Friday. Alternatively, you can add a start and end date. Select Add.
Conditions: Select Course grade range > Add. Enter a percentage in Grade is greater than or equal to and enter a percentage in Grade is less than. If you want to send out a weekly report to all students, enter 0 in the first box and 101 in the second. Select Save.
Actions: Select Send email and then select Add. Select who you want the email to come from and select Add recipient > Triggering User. Enter the subject for the email, or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Enter the email text or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Select Save.
Rule name: Enter a rule name that describes the rule. Select Save.
Sample 5: Quiz or Assignment Not Submitted Rule:
You can use PLD to alert students when they need to submit a quiz or assignment. This rule will allow you to send out this alert when they need to submit a quiz; you can modify it to be sent for assignments too. You can also modify it for specific quizzes and assignments as well.
Events: Recurring event> Daily or weekly> Add or date and time specific event. > Add. To use this rule for a specific quiz, select the quiz name from the Activity menu.
Conditions: Select Activity completed > Add. Select has not and Use the activity that triggered this rule. Select Save.
Actions: Select Send email and then select Add. Select who you want the email to come from and select Add recipient > Triggering User. Enter the subject for the email, or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Enter the email text or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Select Save.
Rule name: Enter a rule name that describes the rule. Select Save. Important Note: This rule requires course and activity completion on assignments to run. You do not need activity completion on quizzes.
Sample 6: Forum Post Rule:
You can use PLD to remind students to create posts in a forum. This rule is setup to alert students who have not posted, but you can edit it to alert students who have not replied to posts either.
Events: Recurring event> Daily or weekly> Add or date and time specific event. > Add. To use this rule for a specific forum, select the forum name from the Activity menu.
Conditions: Select Activity completed > Add. Select has not and Use the activity that triggered this rule. Select Save.
Actions: Select Send email and then select Add. Select who you want the email to come from and select Add recipient > Triggering User. Enter the subject for the email, or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Enter the email text or select Insert token to use preset tokens. Select Save.
