The Moodle™ 5.0 and 5.1 releases focus on delivering improvements that enhance the user experience, strengthen core capabilities such as assessment and reporting, expand AI tools, and update the overall look and feel of the LMS. These updates ensure the platform remains modern, accessible, and high-performing for everyone.
This overview highlights the most important changes for all OpenLMS users: educators, learners, and administrators.
Moodle™ 5.0: Core Usability And Assessment

- Centralized view: Key activities, including Assignments, Feedback, Workshops, and Quizzes, are now consolidated in a single, easier-to-manage view.
- Clear deadlines: Dates and deadlines are now displayed in a straightforward format.
- Visual cues: Color-coded activity icons help users quickly identify and navigate between different types of content.
- Cleaner interface: Collapsible sections help manage information density and reduce visual clutter.
Assessment and grading tools
- Enhanced Question Bank: Managing large sets of questions is now significantly easier with robust new filtering options, allowing educators to search by:
- Question name, ID, and type
- Status and date of last modification
- Owner or last editor
- More reliable Quizzes: Quiz attempt creation is more stable through asynchronous processing, and quiz attempt states are clearer for better tracking.

- Accessibility focus: Continued improvements include support for long descriptions on complex images, enhanced screen reader compatibility, and better keyboard navigation.

Key Changes To Review
Before fully adopting the 5.0 and 5.1 upgrades in your Open LMS, we recommend reviewing the following areas:
☐ Text Editor update
The Atto editor has been removed and replaced by TinyMCE. Confirm that content editing workflows and any custom editor configurations continue to work as expected.
☐ Removed activities
Chat and Survey activities are no longer available in core. Review existing courses to ensure alternatives are in place where needed.
☐ Theme and visual updates
The Boost theme now runs on Bootstrap 5. If you use a custom theme or CSS overrides, validate layout, styling, and responsiveness.
☐ AI Configuration
AI features now support multiple providers, including new provider plugins such as Ollama and DeepSeek, with granular course-level controls. Review governance, provider selection, and access settings before enabling broadly.
☐ Activity Chooser and Course Overview changes
The Activity Chooser and Course Overview pages have been redesigned. Familiarize educators with the updated navigation and workflow.
☐ Badge and Credentials updates
Open Badges 3.0 enhancements may affect how badges are issued and reported. Review badge settings if digital credentials are in use.
☐ Report Builder Enhancements
New report sources and expanded filtering options are available. Consider whether existing reports could benefit from these updates.
