Course Navigation with the Table of Contents (TOC)

The Table of Contents (TOC) is your vital navigation tool within Snap’s courses. It's designed to provide a modern, intuitive, and user-centric experience for exploring all your course content.

How It Works: Dynamic and Responsive Navigation

TOC in Snap offers a dynamic and responsive interface, incorporating features designed to simplify course interaction:

Expand or Collapse Topics

Users can now expand or collapse individual topics for a cleaner and more manageable view, allowing them to focus on the current section.

Quick Activity Access

The TOC is designed to help you quickly navigate your course and identify course information with ease:

  • How it works: easily jump straight to any activity or resource within a topic for quicker navigation.
  • Identify by icon: you can now see the type of activity (like an Assignment, Quiz, or Forum) by looking at the icon displayed right before the activity name.
  • Tooltips for clarity: to ensure you always know exactly what you are selecting, Snap displays the full name of the activity or section when you hover your mouse pointer over any item in the TOC.

Completion Indicators - Tracking your progress

The TOC helps you keep track of your progress by providing visual completion indicators for each activity.

  • How it Works: These visual cues show you which activities need to be completed.
  • What You See: The indicator will change appearance (e.g., from an empty circle to a green circle) to clearly indicate whether the activity is completed.
  • Important Note: An activity must have a completion condition set by your instructor or course designer for this indicator to appear and track your progress.

Search

A search bar is available to locate specific activities or resources within the course quickly.

  • Availability: The dynamic search feature within the Table of Contents drawer is specifically designed to help users quickly locate activities and resources, but please keep in mind it is only available for courses using the Custom or Weekly formats and will not appear in other layouts like the Social or Single Activity formats.

Toggle Visibility

The TOC is designed to ensure nothing distracts you from your learning path.

  • How it works: You can easily open or hide the TOC drawer whenever you need it through the icon at the left side of your course.
  • Maximize Focus: By hiding the TOC, the main course content area expands, giving you more screen width to focus on reading, videos, and activities without interference.

Tracking your overall course progress

The Table of Contents now includes a clear, visual indicator at the top so you can instantly see your overall progress within the course, helping you to stay aware of your current completion status.

  • How it works: Shows the percentage of the course completed, representing the number of activities you have finished versus the total number of activities with a completion set.
  • User Benefit: You know exactly how many required steps you have remaining in the course.

Dynamic Color Status

  • The bar changes color dynamically to give you quick feedback on your status:
    • Red: (0–19% complete) – Indicates you are just starting or need to dedicate more time.
    • Yellow: (20–80% complete) – Shows that the course is in progress.
    • Green: (81–100% complete) – Highlights that you are close to finishing the course.
  • User Benefit: Provides instant visual feedback of your performance.

Important Notes

  • Same Information: The percentage displayed here is the same completion status that you can see in the “My Courses” page.
  • Visibility: If your course does not have any activities set with a completion requirement, the progress bar will not be displayed, and the TOC will appear normally without it.
  • This feature is only available for enrolled users as students in the course.

Section and Subsection completion progress indicators

Along with the course completion tracking indicator displayed at the top of the Table of Contents (TOC), we have introduced section-level completion progress indicators.

Each section now displays a label showing how many activities have been completed out of the total number of activities in that section. Only activities with completion tracking enabled are included in this calculation.

This completion progress indicator is also available for subsections, providing more granular visibility into learner progress throughout the course.

Setting to exclude items from the Table of Contents

To provide more flexibility for teachers, we have introduced a new custom setting in the Table of Contents that allows instructors to control which activities are visible in the TOC.

This setting is configured at the activity level, meaning teachers can decide when creating or editing an activity, whether it should appear in the TOC. This helps instructors better manage course navigation and flow, keeping the TOC meaningful and focused on educational purposes.

By default, this setting is unchecked. Excluding an activity from the TOC does not affect its visibility or availability anywhere else in the course, it only controls whether the activity appears in the TOC.

Note: This setting is only applicable when using the Snap theme.

Design Principle: Focusing on the side-positioned TOC

The TOC provides a collapsible drawer positioned on the side of the course interface. This placement is key to providing you with the most functional and intuitive navigation experience.

The design focuses on these core benefits:

  • Full Functionality: The side positioning offers ample space to support the expand and collapse features, allowing the system to display the complete course structure and content hierarchy without compromising readability.
  • Detailed View: You get a richer, more detailed view of your course structure, including topics, activities, and quick-access links, all in one place.

Enhanced User Experience: This focused approach streamlines the design, ensuring intuitive, clean navigation throughout your Snap courses.
