Accessing PLD

PLD operates through rules composed of events, conditions, and actions. To access PLD, go to your course dashboard and click on the PLD icon.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating a Rule

Step 1: Access PLD

First, navigate to your course dashboard and locate the PLD feature. This is where you can create personalized learning experiences.

Step 2: Create a New Rule

Click on "Create a Rule" to kickstart your journey by adding a Rule Name. This step opens up various possibilities for enhancing your course dynamics.

Step 3: Define Triggers (Events)

Select the events that will ignite your rule. Choose triggers that resonate with your teaching style, whether it's a course entry or completion of an activity.

Step 4: Set Conditions

Specify the conditions that must be met for your rule to take action. This ensures that your personalized interventions are deployed effectively.

Step 5: Choose Actions

Now, decide what actions PLD should take when your conditions are met. Whether it's sending an encouraging email or unlocking additional resources, tailor the actions to suit your learners' needs.

Step 6: Review and Activate

Before you finalize, take a moment to review your rule. Once satisfied, click "Save" to activate it & start transforming your course.

The Personalized Learning Designer (PLD) allows you to create complex rules by combining different events, conditions, and actions. Here are some examples of how you can mix and match these components to automate and personalize the learning experience.

Example Combinations

1. Engagement Booster Rule

Purpose: Increase student engagement by sending reminders and encouraging participation.

Events:

Recurring event β†’ Weekly β†’ Set Day of the Week & Time to trigger

Conditions:

Course login β†’ User has NOT logged into the course for 7 days

Actions:

Send email β†’ Encourage students to log in and participate

Display alert β†’ Personalized message to boost engagement

Rule Configuration:

  1. Add Event: Recurring event β†’ Weekly β†’ Add
  2. Add Condition: Course login β†’ User has NOT logged into the course for 7 days β†’ Save
  3. Add Action: Send email → Add recipient (Triggering User) → Compose message→ Save
  4. Add Action: Display alert β†’ Personalized message β†’ Save

2. Performance Improvement Rule

Purpose: Assist students who are underperforming by recommending additional resources.

Events:

Activity graded β†’ Quiz

Conditions:

Activity grade range β†’ Less than 50%

Actions:

Send email β†’ Recommend additional resources or tutoring

Go to activity β†’ Link to additional practice quiz

Rule Configuration:

  1. Add Event: Activity graded β†’ Quiz β†’ Add
  2. Add Condition: Activity grade range β†’ Less than 50% β†’ Save
  3. Add Action: Send email β†’ Add recipient (Triggering User) β†’ Recommend resources β†’ Save
  4. Add Action: Go to activity β†’ Link to practice quiz β†’ Save

3. Timely Submission Reminder Rule

Purpose: Remind students to submit their assignments on time.

Events:

Specific date and time β†’ 24 hours before the assignment due date

Conditions:

Activity completed β†’ Has NOT submitted the assignment

Actions:

Send email β†’ Reminder to submit an assignment

Display alert β†’ Notification on the course dashboard

Rule Configuration:

  1. Add Event: Specific date and time β†’ 24 hours before due date β†’ Add
  2. Add Condition: Activity completed β†’ Has NOT submitted β†’ Save
  3. Add Action: Send email β†’ Add recipient (Triggering User) β†’ Reminder message β†’ Save

4. Course Completion Encouragement Rule

Purpose: Motivate students to complete the course by sending encouraging messages.

Events:

Course start date β†’ 30 days after start date

Conditions:

Activity completed β†’ Has NOT completed the activities

Actions:

Send email β†’ Encourage course completion

Display alert β†’ Motivational message on the course dashboard

Rule Configuration:

  1. Add Event: Course start date β†’ 30 days after β†’ Add
  2. Add Condition: Activity completed β†’ Has NOT Completed β†’ Select the activity β†’ Save

5. Forum Participation Encouragement Rule

Purpose: Encourage students to participate in forum discussions.

Events:

Recurring event β†’ Weekly

Forum topic post β†’ Select Activity Type β†’ Select Activity

Conditions:

Activity Viewed β†’ User Has NOT viewed the following activity > Select Activity β€˜Forum’ β†’ Save

Actions:

Send email β†’ Encourage forum participation

Rule Configuration:

  1. Add Event: 1. Recurring event β†’ Weekly β†’ Add 2. Forum topic post β†’ Select Activity Type β†’ Select Activity
  2. Add Condition: Activity Viewed β†’ User Has NOT viewed the following activity > Select Activity β€˜Forum’ β†’ Save

6. Welcome Message Rule

Purpose: Send a welcome message and introductory materials to new students.

Events:

User added to the group β†’ Select Cohort to add β†’ Add Event

Conditions:

User role check β†’ Triggering User Is β†’ "Student"

Actions:
